Highlights / observations from this week’s episode of Parks and Rec

Nick Offerman (@Nick_Offerman) wrote “Lucky,” and he knocked it out of the park — both as a screenwriter and as Ron Swanson.  Just in case, SPOILERS AHEAD.

  • “Oh… it says ‘Nympho’ on the butt in silver, sparkly letters. Nympho means you’re addicted to sex, and since it’s on the butt, there are other implications as well — so those are a maybe.”
  • Andy looks so weird with a full shave and his hair combed neatly.
  • Was Jerry getting high from licking envelopes?
  • The Tom and Ann relationship has become somewhat believable — and it’s finally breathed some life into her character.
  •  Ann’s Russian accent.
  • “Oh, she drowned immediately. It’s kind of a sad story.”
  • Chris vying for Andy’s professor’s affectations while Ron didn’t even try was a study in the differences between their characters.
  • Did Ron eat 3 steaks?
  • “I know what tiramisu is, and sheep don’t eat it.”
  • Aubrey Plaza was killing it more than usual with her facial expressions this episode.
  • “Well, it’s like I always say: it ain’t government work if you don’t have to do it twice.”
  • Fun Ben lives.
  • “Go buy yourself a Walkman. How much is a Walkman nowadays? Probably more than $20 — here’s $25.
  • “Yeah. Seems like we all had a phenomenal evening.”
  • “You know Ron, someone once told me that this is not how grown-ups deal with tough situations. Oh my god, Ron, it was you who told me that. That’s crazy.”
  • “I’m quite lonely.”
  • Tom and Ann went 48 hours without breaking up — until he gave her a present to celebrate.

The Middleman is one of my favorite shows of all time. It has the good natured humor of shows like Doctor Who and it goes down on my personal list of shows that ended far too prematurely, alongside the likes of Firefly and Arrested Development.

Also, I will watch anything that Natalie Morales (the actress, not the Today Show host) is in.

One of the great joys of my life was working on a brief show called THE MIDDLEMAN—I edited the pilot and directed the sixth episode. It was a delight. You can buy it on DVD and it is totally worth the ride.

Aziz Ansari (@azizansari) is awesome. He plays Tom Haverford on Parks and Recreation, a completely ridiculous version of himself. Therefore, Tom Haverford is a whole ‘nother level of awesome.

Thank you, Dan Harmon. This is why Community rules so hard.

Great piece from the New York Times Sunday Magazine about one of the best shows on TV. Time Magazine also did an interesting Q&A with show creator Vince Gilligan.

As a biology teacher, of all things.

"Glee, to me, works best when it simultaneously manages to serve as an escape hatch for a bunch of confused and stressed out people, while at the same time never letting us completely forget that, when the song is over, these people are going to keep on being stressed out and confused. It works best when we’re seeing for ourselves how important it is to have some kind of escape hatch when your life is a mess, and not when we’re hearing Will explain for the umpteenth time how important everyone is to him."

This season of Chuck is making me do this. Ugh.

New episodes of Burn Notice are airing beginning tonight. Pretty psyched, since it’s one of my favorite shows. It’s well-written, has a solid cast, and mixes funny dialogue with action.
